Université de Moncton

The Université de Moncton is a Canadian francophone university in New Brunswick. It includes campuses in Edmundston, Moncton, and Shippagan.

The university was founded in 1963 following the recommendations of the royal commission on higher education in New Brunswick. Since then, the institution has been widely regarded as the heir to several Acadian institutions of higher learning such as the Collège Saint-Joseph.

The university strives to be a generalised university, offering training and research in the fields of management, arts, social sciences, law, engineering, natural sciences, health, social work and education. As Canada’s largest exclusively French-language university outside of Quebec, the university has, as of December 1, 2021, 4 655 full-time and 509 part-time enrolments; of the total number, 66.4% are from New Brunswick and 20.7% are international.

Faculties

The University of Moncton has more than 200 programmes distributed among seven faculties:

  1. Faculty of Administration (Administration)
  2. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (Arts et des sciences sociales)
  3. Law (Droit)
  4. Engineering (Ingénierie)
  5. Science (Sciences)
  6. Health Sciences and Community Services (Sciences de la santé et des services communautaires)
  7. Education (Sciences de l’éducation)

Not all faculties offer programmes on each campus, with the Moncton campus being the home to most single-campus programmes or schools. In many cases, students may take the first year of a programme at the Edmundston or Shippagan campuses before having to transfer to the Moncton Campus. The School of Forestry (École de foresterie) within the Faculty of Science offers courses on the Edmundston Campus only, while the Faculty of Science programmes in Sustainable development and coastal zone (Développement durable et zone côtière) and in Information management (Gestion de l’information) are only offered at the Shippigan Campus. The first year of the Nursing programme at the Shippagan Campus is followed by three years in Bathurst.

The University of Moncton offers a range of studies at the graduate certificate, graduate diploma, master’s and doctoral levels. It is also the home of the medical training program run by the Université de Sherbrooke.

Several of these programmes are the only ones offered in French east of Quebec or outside the province of Quebec. The Faculty of Law is unique in offering training in common law in French, one of only two in the world (the other being the University of Ottawa.
